From Horrible Hoarding to a Little Piece of Donkey Heaven - Announcing Sanctuary for Herbie the Love Bug

We got a call about a little over a month ago, from a wonderful rescuer who had saved a two year old mini-donkey from a truly bad hoarding situation. Herbie is a little guy who has some special needs as he was born with front leg deformities and is severely knock-kneed, especially on his left front. Our rescuer kept him at her farm but he was not thriving as she wanted and she gave us a call. Wanting the best for him, we were asked to take him into our sanctuary here at the farm. He needed to get used to being a donkey and we needed to work on any issue he might have to thrive.

Bonnie and I went to pick him up. We loved him at first sight and so will you. Herbie came with a tiny, little incomplete bray that sounded like a squeak. His front legs look like he is doing a reverse ballet movement. Herbie is adorable and kind.

Now Herbie is starting to thrive while living with many of the donkeys here at the farm. We also boosted his hay intake, added our donkey feed mix with minerals and placed him in a stall with a heating lamp. Herbie at night is next to Wiggins, our biggest donkey who can overlook his stall to keep an eye on him when they are in the barn. Herbie also learned a big voice bray of his very own. Soon Herbie will go out into a small herd with other donkeys in the next few weeks, after recuperating from being gelded.

We have been in touch with his rescuer and she with us. She misses him deeply. She is very happy that he is starting to thrive and that her actions and love put him on his new life's journey here at Ray of Light Farm.

Visit him here at the farm and you will fall for him too, for after all, he is
